gay art – the lord won’t mind

The first gay romance novel published to the mass market.

When The Lord Won’t Mind came out in the 1960s it was something completely different in published novels: a story of the tempestuous romance between Charlie and Peter. Their series went on through a few more novels but nothing was ever as sensational as the first one – the first time we read of two men kissing within the pages of a novel published by a big publisher.

Simpler times, I suppose.

As syrupy-sweet as the Charlie and Peter books were, they led the way for what would become the renaissance of gay publishing just a few decades later.

Today’s Gay Art of the Week is from that novel: this is the cover illustration for the 1995 reprint of the novel: Charlie and Peter kissing.
